A. Park The Things They Carried The symbols in Tim O’Brien’s â€Å"The Things They Carried† are essential to understanding the soldiers and their lives during the Vietnam War. At the opening of the story, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross would dig into his foxhole and read the letters while imagining romance with Martha; however, at the end of the story after the death of Ted Lavender, he â€Å"crouched at the bottom of his foxhole and burned Martha’s letters† (402). The inner feelings of Cross would be mistakenly ignored without the help of symbols throughout his travel through Vietnam. O’Brien uses the emotional and physical weight carried by the soldiers as a representation of their personalities and how they prefer to cope with the war. The†¦show more content†¦He had touched these items day by day, wondering who had been beside her while she had retrieved the pebble from the beach, or who placed the shadow in the photo of her. His mind would race day and night, making i t difficult for him to provide adequate attention on the war. Cross â€Å"would yell at his men to spread out the column, to keep their eyes open, but then he would slip away into daydreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the Jersey shore; with Martha, carrying nothing† (396). Cross would hope for nothing more than to be carrying nothing. These physical objects weighed him down terribly after the death of Ted Lavender. He had loved Martha much more than his men, and due to his overpowering love he had lost one of them. The pebble was not only a symbol of importance to Cross as he dealt with the trauma of war, but as the physical weight he carried due to the death of his man. These physical symbols helped to identify a shift in the story when Cross decides to open up and make a change to the way he is coping with the war after Lavender’s death. This â€Å"wouldn’t help Lavender, he knew that, but from this point on he would comport himself as an office r† (403). Another symbol O’Brien used in the story was the superstitious items carried by the soldiers which helped them to cope with the trauma of the war. Obedience is an essential part in the format of humanity, and it’s destructiveness has been investigated throughout time. Stanley Milgram organized a research to test the destructiveness of obedience however, Milgram wanted to investigate why ordinary people are keen to obey an authority figure and commit evil deeds even when it goes against their beliefs. As far as Im concerned putting off things you can do today until tomorrow isnt a bad thing. One must consider that maybe Im just pacing myself, making sure I dont take on too much, giving my life a chance to catch its breath. When viewed this way, it would seem that, contrary to popular belief, procrastination reduces stress. While a non-procrastinator may sit down and type an essay in,lets say 2 or 3 hours, the procrastinor will spend the whole weekend preparing. theyll think about it, setting in motion the thought processes. theyll sit on twitter,facebook or some kind of video game,testing their level of finger dexterity so that they could be proficient typers. hey may download music,for inspiration. go for a walk,because exercise fuels the mind. maybe theyll spend time with friends,so that theyre not disturbed by distracting texts or phone calls when theyre trying to write their essay. Then, the procrastinator will work with a super-human pace, taking far less time to complete the same tasks as the ordinary person. On a mythbusters episode,the crew decided to test if our perception of time could be altered so that more could be accomplished . People under stressful situations, or say time limits, can work their brains harder and faster. The mythbusters created a watch which flashed a number that was ordinarily too fast to read, but when pushed from a crane the man could read the number. Similarly, the adrenaline of a looming deadline allows for superhuman thoughts. The procrastinator can create the piece of work in record time. Dont believe me? just take the example of public speaking. For a prepared speech ,speakers get up and give an ordinary recount. Its often boring. Its often not very good. Too rehearsed, or not rehearsed at all. But in short prep round, under the time pressure of three min. participants are forced to drag out that forgotten humor or intelligence within themselves so as to avoid embarrassment. So how come these people are called lazy? Procrastinators merely make more time, prepare further and adopt superhuman powers of thought. We should aspire to be like the 20% of chronic procrastinators in the world. you know,sometime in the future. After we finish the speeches , and go home,and take a nap , and eat diner,and watch the next episode of the voice,cause after all i am a PROCRASTINATOR.
